Starmer breaks Brexit silence, pledges better EU deal
Labour leader sets out party's position in post-Brexit trade deal
Reform UK came second in many seats where Labour won, delivering on Farage's pledge
Keir Starmer has broken his silence on Brexit and pledged a better trading deal with the EU should Labour win the next general election. In a short press conference on Christmas Eve, the Labour leader confirmed his party's position on the new post-Brexit trade deal, saying: "With Labour, Britain will stay outside of the EU. But to seize the opportunities ahead, we must make Brexit work. We will reset the relationship and seek to secure a better deal for Britain."
Starmer's comments come after a poll by the More in Common think tank found that only 18 percent of voters know or believe Starmer's actual position on Brexit. The poll also found that Reform UK, the party led by Nigel Farage, came second in many seats where Labour won in the 2019 general election. This suggests that Farage's pledge to position Reform UK as the main challenger to Labour in the next election is bearing fruit.
Starmer's speech was an attempt to set out Labour's position on Brexit and to reassure voters that the party is committed to making Brexit work. However, it remains to be seen whether these efforts will be successful in the long run.
