Premier League: Brighton Stun Man United With Last-Gasping Penalty

Feisty Clash Ends in Dramatic Conclusion

United's Champions League Hopes Dented

Premier League title hopefuls Manchester United were dealt a blow on their opening weekend as Brighton & Hove Albion snatched a dramatic 99th-minute penalty winner to secure a stunning victory at Old Trafford.

The match was a feisty affair, with both teams creating chances but failing to break the deadlock in regulation time. Erik ten Hag's United side suffered a setback in their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

Cristiano Ronaldo, returning after a preseason injury, ended his six-game goal drought with a sensational strike in the first half to give United the lead. However, Brighton fought back tenaciously, with Pascal Gross scoring a brace to hand ten Hag a heartbreaking defeat on his Premier League debut.

United's loss was particularly bitter as they had lost this exact fixture 2-1 on the opening weekend last season. The Red Devils have now won eight and drawn one of their nine previous games against Brighton but came unstuck against the Seagulls on this occasion.

The defeat leaves United in a precarious position after just one game of the new season. With a difficult run of fixtures ahead, they will need to bounce back quickly if they are to challenge for a top-four finish.
