Duke's Football Field: A History of Innovation and Tradition

From the Beginning to Wallace Wade

Duke University's football field has a long and storied history, dating back to the early days of the program. The first game was played on October 22, 1892, on a field located on the site of the current East Campus. The field was originally known as Athletic Park, and it was home to the Blue Devils until 1929.

In 1929, the football field was moved to its current location on West Campus. The new stadium was named Wallace Wade Stadium in honor of the legendary Duke football coach. Wade coached the Blue Devils for 25 years, and he led them to their first national championship in 1938.

Modern Renovations

Wallace Wade Stadium has undergone several renovations over the years. The most recent renovation was completed in 2012, and it included the addition of a new press box, luxury suites, and club seats. The stadium now has a capacity of over 40,000 fans.

In addition to the renovations, the football field has also seen a number of changes in its playing surface. The field was originally grass, but it was converted to AstroTurf in 1979. The AstroTurf was replaced with FieldTurf in 2007.

A Tradition of Excellence

The Blue Devils have won 11 conference championships and one national championship on their home field.
